Breakfast in Ankara

Mark was right about the snow!! We gingerly made our way on icy, uneven pavements to a restaurant for breakfast this morning. It cost us about £2.50. There is already a couple of inches of snow here in the city, I wonder how much there is in the surrounding villages. I now have about twenty words of Turkish. I like this way of language learning; it involves a lot of cafes!! I prepare a few words from 'learn Turkish' books and then go and practice them on as many people as I dare. When I return back to our host's flat, their six year old daugther kindly speaks these same words into my voice recorder app and I find the Turkish spelling and catalogue them in my notebook. I learnt Urdu in a classroom and barely spoke to anyone other than language teachers....this is much better. But it is also probably going to be more challenging in that I have to be active in directing my own language learning rather than passive. I'm having to learn new tricks that I perhaps should have learnt ages ago; listening for example. I'm trying to actively listen to what people are saying rather than assume. Yesterday Mark and I went into a cafe and forgot to pay... Whilst in our second cafe we remembered and had to return to the first one. This afternoon we are going to view some flats hopefully. The two we looked at yesterday were a little dingy but we are weighing up the pros and cons of furnished as opposed to unfurnished flats. We think the unfurnished flats maybe a nicer....but we shall see.
